Home office has proven to be an effective way to limit contacts at work as well as on the way to work during the Corona pandemic, thus reducing the risk of infection. But while some jobs can be easily done from home, in other areas this is not readily possible - and this is reflected in job postings. The aim of a study conducted by the company Hays is to investigate whether experiences during the pandemic have influenced the very pronounced presence culture in Germany. This involves measuring how often the option of home office is advertised in public job advertisements. For this purpose, advertisements published since 2017 on job exchanges, company websites and in print media that contain the term home office or corresponding designations were counted.
Consulting and advisory services lead the field
For example, remote work is usually feasible without any problems in the consulting and advisory occupational group - accordingly, companies frequently advertise this option in their job ads: in 2017, the home office option was already mentioned in seven percent of the advertisements. One year later, this was already advertised in every tenth job ad, and in 2019 the proportion was well above average at just under 15 percent. In 2020, more than one in five job ads featured "home office." IT and telecommunications are on a par with consulting. Since 2017, this occupational group has seen a development comparable to that in the consulting and advisory sector. Likewise, marketing, PR and advertising professionals have good prerequisites for home office. If the work equipment and infrastructure are in place, they can complete their tasks from anywhere and most meetings and presentations can also take place online. In 2017 and 2018, home office offerings for this professional group were slightly above the average of two and three percent, respectively. From 2019 to 2020, there has been a significant increase: Mentions more than doubled.
Fewer home offices in sales and distribution
In research and development, human resources, engineering jobs, legal and tax, architecture, and finance and accounting, home office mentions in job ads doubled in 2020 compared to the previous year. Less frequently, job seekers in sales and distribution are offered the remote work option: While salespeople can swap the office for a desk at home, at least for inside sales, retail or wholesale sales work is not available from home. As expected, home offices are also virtually impossible to implement in the health, medical and social services sectors. In 2017 and 2018, the percentage of job ads offering such opportunities was less than one percent. Due to the pandemic, the rate rose to around two percent in 2020 - the home office offers then mainly related to jobs where administrative tasks can be performed from home.
